Why this activity matters

Maritime transport carries most of world trade and faces a hard decarbonisation path, reflected in IMO measures, FuelEU Maritime and the EU ETS extension to shipping. The Taxonomy’s criteria sit on top of this machinery: they reference the industry’s own efficiency metrics (such as the EEDI design index) and reward vessels that are demonstrably ahead of the fleet, zero-emission capable, or being retrofitted toward it.
